Adult Basic Education
English as a Second Language/Civics

The Literacy Services Unit is dedicated to providing New Jersey residents an opportunity to enhance their skills through adult literacy to become better equipped for future employment.  

Our goal is to give the people of New Jersey an opportunity to improve their skills through our adult education and literacy programs.  We have the power to help build the skills they need to carry out their roles as workers, parents and community leaders.

The courses listed below offer adults training in areas that will improve their basic skills.  By increasing a person s knowledge and skills will help them become more marketable to employers; AND make it easier to find a job.

Adult Basic Education
Improve your reading, writing and math skills.

Adult Basic Education programs provide opportunities for adults to improve on their reading, writing and mathematics skills which are necessary for productive employment.

These programs are designed for persons who are lacking basic skills in education.  These services are provided free of charge throughout the state of New Jersey.

English as a Second Language/Civics
Learn English and become and citizen.

Need to learn English?  The EL Civics program is set up to help people who have difficulty speaking English.

Our teachers will help you learn how to read, write and understand the English language so you can:   

  • fill out a job application  
  • find a job
  • get a GED
  • learn computer skills
  • learn how to become a U.S. citizen
  • learn about U.S. history and government     

If you are a parent and have problems reading English, you will not be able to help your children with their school work.  We can get you the education you need AND best of all -- these classes are free of charge.
