The new “Pilot Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing Training Program” will help prepare New Jersey veterans to enter careers in the metal product manufacturing industry with employers in the Garden State. About 20 veterans attended a required pre-screening session at the Middlesex County College in Edison yesterday.
“My department remains committed to the nearly 17,000 unemployed veterans in our state. We have a wide range of resources they may tap to find employment to support themselves and their families, and this is one more opportunity,” said Commissioners Harold J. Wirths.
The pilot program runs 12 weeks and requires 288 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction, including onsite visits to metal manufacturers. Classroom training takes place at Middlesex County College.
Successful graduates of this program will receive a College Certificate of Competency and sit for the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Certification Exam for Measurement, Materials, & Safety Level I.
A dozen employers already have indicated that they are interested in hiring program graduates. The minimum starting salary for program graduates is $12 per hour, plus benefits. A higher starting salary is possible depending on past experience of the participant.
