        -News Release-

TRENTON, N.J. January 10, 2012 – Commissioner Harold J. Wirths  of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development today announced a new training program jointly launched with the New Jersey Community College Consortium for Workforce and Economic Development and the New Jersey Business and Industry Association (NJBIA) Manufacturers Network to help veterans find jobs in the manufacturing industry.

The pilot training program will prepare New Jersey veterans to enter careers in the metal product manufacturing industry with employers in the Garden State.

“We recognize that our returning veterans have skills and experiences that can parlay into successful civilian careers,” said Commissioner Wirths. “My department is committed to providing the 17,000 unemployed veterans in our state with the resources they need to find employment to support themselves and their families.”

The program runs 12 weeks and requires 288 hours of classroom and laboratory instruction, including onsite visits to metal manufacturers. Classroom training takes place at Middlesex County College in Edison.

Successful graduates of this program will receive a College Certificate of Competency and sit for the National Institute for Metalworking Skills (NIMS) Certification Exam for Measurement, Materials, & Safety Level I.

Currently a dozen employers have indicated that they are interested in hiring program graduates. The minimum starting salary for program graduates is $12 per hour, plus benefits. A higher starting salary is possible depending on past experience of the participant.

For a complete list of admission requirements, program description, and prescreening, interested candidates must send their resume to Veronica Jones, New Jersey State Veterans Representative, via fax (732) 418-3345 or via e-mail:  veronica.jones@dol.state.nj.us.

Admission requirements also may be found at www.njworkforce.org by clicking on “Pilot Fabricated Metal Product Manufacturing Training Program.”   All candidates must be prescreened by the Department of Labor and Workforce Development and will be invited to an information session in mid-January.
