        -News Release-

HARRISON, December 20, 2011 -- Commissioner Harold J. Wirths of the Department of  Labor and Workforce Development addressed the first graduating class of the Goodwill Works program during a ceremony held at Goodwill Works headquarters in Hudson County.

The Department of Labor partnered with Goodwill to make this program possible with a $750,000 Pilot and Demonstration Grant issued by the Department of Labor in March using federal Workforce Investment Act funds.

The Goodwill Works program uses a “customized training” approach toward employment, developing individualized plans for each candidate, to train for employment, obtain work, retain the job and advance in their employment to acquire financial stability.

Seventeen graduates completed training in the Retail Sales, Certified Technician, and Entrepreneurship programs that will steer graduates to retail and customer service positions, telecommunications, fiber-optics, home audio/telephone and cable installation positions, as well as enabling some candidates to start their own businesses.

The program runs approximately eight weeks and combines classroom training and hands-on experience.

Commissioner Wirths congratulated graduates for their hard work and dedication, and for taking a huge step forward in reaching their potential.
