        -News Release-

TRENTON, Oct. 21, 2011  The New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development (LWD) announced today that workers laid off from the pharmaceutical industry in New Jersey may still take advantage of federal funding issued to the state for re-training and re-employment opportunities.

To keep the Garden State’s valuable pharmaceutical talent in the state and to maintain the state's long-term economic competitiveness, LWD applied for and were approved for a $3.6 million National Emergency Grant from the U.S. Department of Labor in October of 2010. The state has received an initial allocation of more than $1million to retrain these workers.

“We still have funding available for short-term education and training grants at many colleges and universities in New Jersey to help this special segment of our workforce transition into the smaller, but viable and emerging bio-science industry,” said Commissioner Harold J. Wirths.

The grant is being used to assist workers who were laid off from specific pharmaceutical operations to find new jobs or to obtain training to enter employment in other growing industry sectors.  Services available include skills assessment, individual career counseling and occupational skills training.

Qualified candidates may receive up to $5,000 in education grants and are being urged to take advantage of this unique opportunity to enroll in a course that can help them move into another job. New Jersey is now home to about 300 biotech companies.

Those who may be eligible for this assistance include employees laid off from the following companies during the specified dates and specified locations:
