TRENTON, June 14, 2011- New Jersey state employees donated nearly $1.5 million to charitable organizations over the past year.

Their generosity was recognized during the New Jersey State Employee Charitable Campaign awards ceremony held at the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development central office in Trenton today.

“I was honored to serve as the chair for this statewide campaign. My department met its campaign goal because of the incredible coordination and commitment from our state employee volunteers,” said Commissioner Harold J. Wirths of the Labor Department and this year’s chairman of the New Jersey State Employee Charitable Campaign.

The New Jersey State Employee Charitable Campaign steering committee presented a special “Hero Award” to Janice Swierczek, who served as the Department of Labor’s campaign coordinator.  The committee recognized Swierczek for her career long dedication to the charitable campaign.

In addition to the Hero Award, George Xuereb, chair of the New Jersey State Employee Charitable Campaign steering committee, handed out three awards to the Department of Labor:

Outstanding Campaign Award
The Department of Labor was first in a field of five departments for raising the most money in the campaign ($122,644) followed by:
Judiciary - $87,345
Transportation - $87,736
Human Services - $71,003
Taxation - $62,812

Participation Award
The Department of Labor was first in a field of five departments for having the highest employee participation rate in the campaign (23.5 percent) followed by:
Taxation – 22.9 percent
Governor’s Office – 21.2 percent
Agriculture – 19.8 percent
Education – 19.4 percent

Campaign Increase Award
The Department of Labor was among the top five departments for having significant increase in money raised from the previous year ($3,392) preceded by:
Taxation - $16,460
Rutgers Newark - $5,321
New Jersey Transit Corp. - $3,707
Technology - $3,623

The money raised from the statewide campaign will support 1,500 local and state charitable organizations.
