WARREN, October 1, 2010 — Commissioner Harold J. Wirths commended the management and workers of Astrolab, Inc., in Somerset County, for their successful and cooperative commitment to workplace safety. Astrolab designs and manufactures state-of-the-art microwave devices. Commissioner Wirths presented the company’s safety team with the prestigious Occupational Safety and Health Administration SHARP award.

The SHARP (Safety and Health Achievement Recognition Program) award recognizes small business employers who demonstrate exemplary achievements in workplace safety and health.

"It is clear that the workers and managers at Astrolab, Inc. take safety and health seriously and look out for each other,” said Wirths. “This award is recognition that the commitment of everyone at Astrolab to make their workplace as safe as possible is worth the effort.”

The SHARP award, a program of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), is presented for implementing exceptional workplace safety and health programs and maintaining low employee injury and illness rates. The award also exempts employers with outstanding programs and low injury/illness rates from random compliance inspections.

Since the early 1970s, New Jersey state government has worked in close partnership with the federal OSHA agency to help protect workers.
