Apr-07-10 46,000 New Jerseyans Lost Unemployment Insurance Coverage In the First Quarter of 2010

TRENTON, April 7, 2010 – The end of March marked a difficult milestone for more than 40,000 New Jersey workers who collected the last unemployment insurance benefits available to them, swelling the ranks of unemployed workers who are no longer eligible for unemployment insurance benefits. One Pompton Lakes resident who exhausted all of her unemployment insurance eligibility last week, after a year of without a job, spoke about the difficulty she and many other workers have had trying to find new employment. The worker, who has been using services at the One-Stop Career Center in Hackensack, said she was frustrated with the lack of response from job applications she has filed. “I’m starting to lose sleep over this,” she said. After talking with a representative at the Department of Labor and Workforce Development, she now is exploring her options for training that would allow her to change her career path to a medical field. |

In addition, the One-Stop Career Center staff will help the unemployed navigate the Internet to apply for assistance through the NJ Helps program, housing assistance and other programs available through county and state agencies such as the Department of Human Services.
“We have a wide range of programs and tools to help workers prepare for and find new employment,” said Richard E. Constable, III, deputy commissioner of the Department of Labor and Workforce Development. “Please visit www.nj.gov/labor or go to your local One-Stop Career Center. Computers and other help are available to the public there and counselors can work with customers, one-to-one, to help guide their career searches or help with training options. To date, no legislation has been passed by Congress that would extend the April 4, 2010 ending date for all federal extended benefits, including the additional $25 weekly benefit.
New federal legislation would have to be enacted to implement additional Emergency Unemployment Compensation tiers.
