ELIZABETH, October 21, 2009 – Access to services for job seekers and employers just got easier in Union County. New Jersey Labor Commissioner David J. Socolow joined County officials at a ribbon-cutting ceremony today marking the official opening of the comprehensive, state-of-the-art One-Stop Career Service Center at 921 Elizabeth Avenue in the city of Elizabeth.
A wide array of state and county programs and services are located together in this One-Stop Center. Here workers can get help obtaining skills training, career guidance, assistance in finding a job, vocational rehabilitation services, help resolving unemployment insurance issues or help with county welfare programs and welfare-related work programs. Employers can make use of the Business Resource Center for positive recruitment and worker interviews as well as access to a wide range of labor market data.
“Here in Elizabeth, we have a place where residents can turn to any number of people and programs for the help they need,” said Labor Commissioner Socolow. “Workers, job-seekers, employers, people with disabilities, all can find county and state workforce services operating side-by-side here on Elizabeth Avenue instead of at four different locations spread out across the city.
Union County Freeholders Deborah Scanlon and Bette Jane Kowalski attended the ribbon cutting, as well as Deputy County Manager M. Elizabeth Genievich, Human Services Director Frank Guzzo, Parks and Community Renewal Department Director Al Faella.
“"The One-Stop Career Center is a free service open to all Union County residents and employers who need an assist with practically every aspect of job placement," said Union County Freeholder Chairman Alexander Mirabella. "If you need a job, are looking to improve your skills, or are searching for the right employee for your business, One-Stop is the place to get a great start."
“We believe it is vitally important that Union County residents have a single location they can turn to for the help they need,” Commissioner Socolow said. “Whether it’s a worker looking to update skills, a business looking for qualified employees, or a resident with a number of issues, this one-stop career center brings many different workforce programs together in a single location to create the type of teamwork that promotes economic growth and development.”
Workers seeking to file new unemployment insurance claims or reopen existing claims can file over the Internet from home or from the Center at
