Training Programs for Demand Occupations

Do you need to improve your skills? Are you considering a career change?

The Department of Labor and Workforce Development tracks which occupations are “in demand” in which areas. Learn which training programs for in-demand jobs can help you accomplish your goals in the Training Programs for Demand Occupations list.

Training Programs for Demand Occupations is based on the list of Real-Time Jobs in Demand. This list brings together information about current job openings, trends and projections in employment and labor supply, and other current indicators of the labor market.

Training Programs for Demand Occupations can help career counselors and their clients find relevant skills training programs. Training Programs for Demand Occupations shows you where there are skills gaps in the current economy, as well as the size of the skills shortage.  This list also shows anticipated employer need for trained workers in the listed fields.

You can view or download Training Programs for Demand Occupations by Occupational Cluster within a region.  The list includes CIP codes and the titles of training programs within occupational pathways.

Message for Career Counselors

Use this list as a starting point when approving individual training programs in the Workforce Development Partnership  (WDP) Act, Workforce Investment Act (WIA), and all other occupational training initiatives within New Jersey’s Workforce Investment System.

The list of Training Programs for Demand Occupations is NOT meant to be a final, standalone authority for approval or denial of training in Workforce Development Partnership or any other program.

When making training decisions, it is also important to consider the individual’s:

  • employability development plan,
  • local and regional labor market conditions,
  • the labor market area where the trainee is likely to seek employment, and
  • the impact of training on the individual’s marketable skills and earning power.

Exception to Demand Approval Program

Occupational clusters contain narrower job pathways and training programs as defined in the Perkins Act of 2006. Each Workforce Investment Board (WIB) developed its own geographic configuration. In deciding which counties should be included in a job-demand area, each WIB took into account the commuting patterns of its residents, employers’ recruiting areas, and other pertinent considerations.

A WIB may request that the Department of Labor and Workforce Development add (or delete) an occupation to the Demand List for its area. To do this, the WIB must complete a Demand Occupation Approval form. Exceptions are made in accordance with the procedures outlined in the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development's To Work Bulletin 2005-01 dated April 14, 2005. When a WIB designates an occupation as “in demand,” individuals under the WIB’s jurisdiction may participate in training.
